Starbuck’s reverses open-door policy, buy something or leave

Starting Jan. 27, 2025, Starbuck’s will no longer allow people to hang out at its stores or use the restroom unless that buy something.

The company says violators of the policy will be asked to leave, and law enforcement may be called if necessary. To help enforce the rules, Starbucks employees will receive training on the new policy.

The coffee chain implemented the open-door policy in 2018 but said the policy change “aims to prioritize paying customers” and that “many other retailers already have similar rules.”

Starbucks says its new rule will be for all North American cafés. The company’s code of conduct also bans discrimination or harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use and panhandling.

Starbucks clarified that the new Coffeehouse Code of Conduct is not intended to exclude anyone but to create a more welcoming and comfortable environment for all customers.
